(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A one-of-a-kind mobile veterinary clinic is officially open to the public on Chicago's South Side.

PAWS Chicago Executive Director Susanna Homan says the new Mobile Vet Clinic will offer much needed medical resources for pets who would otherwise not receive veterinary care.

“A basic annual veterinary exam for animals costs a few hundred dollars. And for many people that’s way out of reach. The beauty of a mobile unit is utility in allowing us to be directly in communities,” she said.

On the first day of a two-day vet clinic Friday, dozens of pet owners and their furry friends lined up to get free vaccinations and check-ups.

The mobile unit will regularly serve Englewood, West Englewood, Woodlawn, and the Back of the Yards neighborhoods. It also offers microchipping, skin testing and treatment for respiratory and intestinal issues – all free of charge.
