More self-serve options coming to O'Hare Airport

O'Hare International Airport Terminal Sign

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A city council committee has given the OK for more self-serve options at O’Hare International Airport.

The City Council's Aviation Committee approved the plan to allow more selve-serve stores into the airport.

The automated vending options are in response to changing traveler tastes during the COVID pandemic. Passengers want less face-to-face interaction.

Airport staple Hudson News will open mini-marts that will allow people to swipe a credit card upon entry, and then whatever they buy is automatically charged to their card. It's similar to the technology at Amazon Go locations.

The plans also call for new vending machines at concourses and baggage claims in Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Local favorite Nuts on Clark will dispense popcorn from four locations at the airport. Automatic coffee stands will set up shop in the baggage claim area.

Other vending machines will dispense cupcakes and baby essentials. Additionally, Kenosha-based Good Vibes will also set up foot massage machines at 10 locations and MAG USA lounge management will offer private workstations at six locations around the airport.

The measure heads to the City Council for a final vote later this month.
