CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The mother of 13-year-old Adam Toledo tells WBBM Newsradio she wants to know why Chicago police used deadly force early Monday, killing her son in Little Village.
“I’m trying to process everything of what happened to my baby,” Elizabeth Toledo said Friday.
She said she has been told the family next week may be allowed to see the Chicago Police bodycam video that shows what happened to Adam. Police have said officers responded to gunshots and in an alley came upon what they say was an armed confrontation.
The 13-year-old was fatally shot in the chest, and a 21-year-old was arrested. A weapon was recovered at the scene near 24th and Sawyer.
“I want to know what happened. Why was the reason they shot him to death? They could have used other resources,” Elizabeth Toledo said.
She said officers could have “shot him in the leg or something.”
“And if he ran he was probably scared,” she said. “He’s a little, he was a little kid.”
Elizabeth Toledo says her son liked Legos and still played with Hot Wheels cars.
Local Ald. George Cardenas said he feels terrible about the teen’s death but questions why he was out at 2:30 a.m. with someone who reportedly has gang affiliations.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the police shooting. COPA announced Friday it will release body cam video of the shooting after researching the legalities involving a minor.
Elizabeth Toledo has started a Go Fund Me page to help pay for funeral expenses for her son.
