CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The mother of a Chicago man who was killed while trying to intervene when he saw a couple fighting says it’s a testament to his character.

“It’s such a loss it’s something that will forever mark me and impact me, but at the same token I’m so honored and privileged,” Cruz told CBS 2. “It’s just a testament of his character his selflessness you know his kindness his heart,” Cruz said.

Molly Cruz has conflicting feelings. She'll always carry the loss of her son, but she's also proud of him.

Michael Bankston saw a man and woman fighting on Milwaukee Avenue at 4 a.m. one day in September in Logan Square.

He asked the woman if she was ok and was then shot to death. Prosecutors said surveillance cameras captured the incident.

Garcia claimed self-defense, but prosecutors didn't agree and said Bankston was just trying to help.
