OAK LAWN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — At a funeral home in Oak Lawn Wednesday afternoon, mourners paid their respects to veteran Chicago Police Officer Andrés Vásquez Lasso, who was fatally shot while on duty last week.
Police officers from Schaumburg, Algonquin, Cook County, Chicago and elsewhere, along with firefighters, family and members of the community all came out to pay tribute to Lasso.
Many stood out in the cold before they were able to enter the Blake-Lamb Funeral Home.
Jeffrey Clevinger, an Army veteran, said the officer’s heroism won’t ever be forgotten.
“We have Army to protect our country. We have police to protect our cities and states … and what he did, in putting his life on the line to save those people—those kids in the park—it took a lot of bravery,” he said.
Clevinger said everyday heroes are all around us.
“Every firefighter, every veteran, every cop that I know puts his life on the line…I always thank them for their sacrifice,” he said.
An American flag was flying at half-staff, saluting the fallen officer.
Lasso’s funeral mass will take place on Thursday at 10 a.m., followed by a private burial.
