CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Six people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, including a Chicago firefighter, following multiple crashes on the Eisenhower Expressway Sunday morning.

Illinois State Police said troopers were responding to the hit-and-run crash on the outbound Ike near California Avenue when a silver Infiniti hit a squad car and a Chicago Fire truck around 5:30 a.m.

Shortly after that, a silver Chevrolet Malibu hit a tow truck at the crash.

Authorities said the driver of the silver Infiniti, 29-year-old Eddie Johnson, has been issued citations for failing to yield to a stationary emergency vehicle, driving under the influence and other traffic violations.

The crashes came only one day after Slow Down and Move Over Day, an effort across the country to protect first responders.

As the name suggests, Slow Down and Move Over Day reminds drivers of the exact actions they should take when they see flashing lights.
