NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Naperville City Council is looking into whether food trucks should be regulated in any way.
The issue of food trucks was first brought up last month by a former Naperville city council member complaining about potential traffic issues by food trucks. This week, the Naperville city staff was instructed to look into whether there needs to be regulations of any kind besides possibly county health permits.
Mayor Steve Chirico said he’s torn on the matter.
"It seems to me there should be some sort of certifications or permitting that gets in place for this but at the same time, I want to be careful that we don’t sort of stymie the entrepreneurialship," he said.
"I know that Fire It Up is a restaurant here in Naperville, started as a food truck, little taco place that I love to go to."
A couple of council members indicated they wanted to make sure food trucks play by the same rules restaurants do especially in the paying of food and beverage taxes.
"I would be curious if we can look at what the tax piece of this is. If someone is doing this for a long period of time-way that we collect tax on the things they are selling," Councilman Dr. Benjamin White questioned.
Naperville staff will look into how other cities deal with food trucks and report back to the council.
