Plans for part of a Naperville Mall to become a site for religious services have been given preliminary approval by the City’s zoning officials.
Kathleen Russell with Naperville's Planning Department, told the City Planning and Zoning Commission that Sri Veda Dharmashala wants a variance for religious services and part of the Mall of India on Route 59.
"The proposed religious use will include spiritual guidance and services such as naming ceremonies, first feeding ceremonies, Hindu rituals of initiation, first day of school, wedding, anniversaries and special birthdays," Russell said.
Architect Shilpa Purohit told the commission the religious group likes the space that once housed a garden center.
"For whatever the reason is, this has not been very desirable for the uses that are allowed. But, as we say, you know, someone's jungle, someone else's treasure, and this is a perfect fit for this organization that is here," Purohit said.
The commission unanimously voted to recommend full approval.
