NAPERVILLE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Some high school students in Naperville will get a voice in how their suburb is run.

Naperville has seats for students on a variety of the suburb's boards and commissions.

City spokesperson Linda LaCloche said the program teaches students leadership skills and helps them learn about a variety of career opportunities in local government.

“We all know that there is police officers and firefighters that serve our communities, but do you know that there is an accountant keeping track of things that are happening on the finance side? There is a city attorney that write the ordinances, engineering people who are building our roads. There are a lot of different career paths that I think a lot of kids don’t think about,” LaCloche said.

She said the program also gives the adult members of boards and commissions a better idea of how their decisions affect Naperville's youth.

High school students have until September 30 to apply on the city of Naperville's website for a board or commission seat.
