NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Naperville officials say police will begin enforcing the city’s assault weapons ban, but first must work out some details.

A federal judge turned down a Naperville gun shop’s request to put a temporary hold on a Naperville ordinance forbidding the sales of some kinds of high-powered rifles.

City Attorney Mike DiSanto said the suburb is now free to enforce the law, but will provide some kind of grace period while the city has discussions with businesses that will be impacted, according to the Daily Herald. The Naperville law does not forbid the private sales of assault guns.

"If the plaintiffs decide to continue to litigate this," DiSanto told the Daily Herald, "the city's prepared to defend it and believes this is in the best interest of the safety and welfare of our community."
