(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- While much of the weather concerns this week center on wildfire haze, storms could provide a challenge for organizers of this weekend’s NASCAR Street Race.
Jose Tirado, acting executive director for Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communication, said his agency is in regular contact with the state Environmental Protection Agency and the National Weather Service about the smoky, hazy conditions.
The hazardous air is expected to lift by the weekend. More pressing may be the potential stormy conditions forecast for Saturday and Sunday.
Street Race President Julie Giese said rain generally isn’t a problem because race cars have weather gear. Lightning is a different story, she said.
“We would do everything we can to get those races in Saturday or Sunday,” she said.
Still, if necessary, Saturday’s event could get pushed to Sunday and Sunday’s race to Monday, Giese said.
Chicago Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt says NASCAR will handle the main EMS services but the department will take over if a major event arises.
