Utility watchdog: Natural gas prices doubled compared to a year ago

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — With temperatures at or below freezing Sunday, you may want to avoid looking at your natural gas bill since some home heating costs have doubled.

The Citizens Utility Board has found Nicor Gas customers are paying more than twice what they did this time last year. People’s Gas bills are up by 92% and North Shore Gas is up by 41%.

A Nicor spokeswoman told the Daily Herald if costs remained the same, the typical residential customer would pay about $770 from November through March. The company is regulated by the Illinois Commerce Commission so it can’t profit from the sale of natural gas, but can from higher delivery rates.
