INDIANAPOLIS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Indiana University Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis is getting help from the Navy as it deals with surging COVID-19 cases.

The IU hospital system has seen staffing levels plummet over the past year and-a-half and predictions a couple weeks ago were that beds occupied by COVID patients would soon be at the highest level yet.

Now, the Navy is sending a team of 20 nurses, respiratory therapists and physicians from San Antonio, who will be starting on Christmas Day.

Dr. Paul Calkins told CBS 4 Indianapolis that the situation is “the most disheartening thing he can imagine.”

"People are really really tired of this," he said. "You can only do this so long before it becomes draining."

IU Health is already receiving assistance from the National Guard.
