Nearly 600 Crown Point students, staff quarantined after COVID outbreak

Coronavirus

CROWN POINT, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Hundreds of students and staff in a northwest Indiana school district are quarantining following a COVID-19 outbreak.

According to Superintendent Todd Terrill, 593 students and staff in the Crown Point Community School Corporation were placed in quarantine last week.

Just two weeks into the school year, 41 students and three staff members tested positive for the virus. Nearly half of those quarantining are from the high school.

Supt. Terrill told The Northwest Indiana Times the district wants to keep kids in school, so it is determining which measures would give the best chance of achieving that.

Currently, face masks are optional for all students, but school board members discussed adding a mask mandate at their last meeting, though no action has been taken yet.

On Monday, the Indiana Department of Health reported over 5,500 new positive cases among students and 255 new cases among teachers. Over 1,300 of the student cases were reported on Aug. 23 alone.

The next Crown Point school board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sept. 27.
