New Indiana law introduced to crack down on stealing catalytic converters

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Indiana Secretary of State is hoping a new state law will cut down on the theft of catalytic converters as thieves seek to profit from the precious metals inside the devices.

Businesses wanting to buy or sell catalytic converters will have to be licensed by the state.

There are record-keeping requirements and a cap of one converter sale per day.

Secretary of State Holli Sullivan, who championed the law, said she had an experience with a Honda she gave to her daughter.

Sullivan said theft of catalytic converters has increased by more than 325% between 2019 and 2020.

The law would go into effect on July 1 and violators of the law could be fined $10,000.
