CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A new “shop local” campaign in the northern suburbs aims to instill a sense of community pride as small businesses attempt to rebound from 2020 pandemic losses.

Mundelein Mayor Steve Lentz said the community is made up of optimistic entrepreneurs.

“We have craft breweries, blown glass places, family owned bakeries, florists,” he said. “The list truly goes on and on.”

Many of those shops have struggled during the pandemic, which inspired the new “Made in Mundelein, Made for You” campaign.

“The goal is for residents to reflexively look at buying local whenever they go shopping,” Lentz said. “Also as importantly is to have the business owners be part of this. So when they have to go source items for their business, they look to local business for their sourcing. We find that’s a very important part of this.”

The campaign will include a website and social media presence, and organizers plan to keep it going into 2022.
