CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 15-year-old boy charged with a carjacking Jan. 23 at a fast food restaurant in suburban Addison was ordered to be held without bail Monday in DuPage County court.
The teen is facing a felony charge of aggravated vehicular highjacking and a felony count of armed robbery, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s office.
On Jan. 23 around 10:45 p.m., Addison police officers responded to a report of a vehicular hijacking near the Popeye’s restaurant in the western suburb, prosecutors said. Upon their arrival, officers learned that the victim, a 21-year-old woman, was walking through the restaurant’s parking lot when she was approached by three individuals, two of whom were armed.
The suspects, including the 15-year-old boy charged, demanded her belongings and car keys, and threatened to kill her if she did not comply, prosecutors said. After the woman complied, the trio sped from the scene in her car.
Officers nearby saw the vehicle speeding and pursued it, prosecutors said. With help from Illinois State police, the vehicle was tracked to the South Side of Chicago.
As officers approached the stolen vehicle, the group ran, but one teen was taken into custody and returned to Addison, prosecutors said.
On Jan. 31, Addison police officers, with assistance from the Chicago Police Department, took the second juvenile into custody while executing a search warrant at the juvenile’s home.
“I would like to thank the Chicago Police Department for their assistance on this case, which ultimately led to the apprehension of the second suspect,” Berlin said. “The cooperative efforts exhibited by not only the Chicago Police Department, but the Illinois State Police and the Addison Police Department sends the message that in DuPage County we will work with our law enforcement partners throughout Illinois to bring to justice anyone accused of violent crime, such as alleged in this case. I would like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Kristin Sullivan and Nick Catizone for their work in preparing a strong case against these defendants.”
The teen is due back in court Feb. 17.
An investigation into this matter continues. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Addison Police Department at (630) 693-7941.
“The charges filed today against this individual are the direct result of our officers receiving a tremendous amount of support and assistance from the Chicago Police Department,” Addison Director of Police Bill Hayden said. “Violent crimes are an affront to our entire criminal justice system and at times require cooperative efforts between agencies to bring the alleged offenders to justice, as we saw in this case. I thank the Chicago Police Department, the Illinois State Police and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office for all their efforts on this case.”
