CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The City of Chicago said it plans to have fireworks during the city's official Independence Day festivities, but those plans apparently don't include Navy Pier.
Officials at the lakefront attraction announced Thursday that there will be no fireworks at the pier on Saturday, July 3 or Sunday, July 4 "due to the previously unknown status of the COVID-19 pandemic in Chicago this summer and its impact on the Pier’s ability to successfully plan for the large-scale celebration in advance."
There will be a variety of other activities over the holiday weekend, but timing became an issue, with unresolved questions about the pandemic.
“Typically, the Pier welcomes more than 100,000 guests on that particular occasion. We would have needed to secure necessary regional and federal security resources months in advance — back in early spring, March, April," spokeswoman Payal Patel said.
Except for July 3, there will be fireworks shows on Wednesdays and Saturdays at Navy Pier until the Labor Day weekend.
