EVANSTON, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Evanston may start charging non-residents to park along the lakefront.

Non-residents would pay $3 an hour to park on streets along the lakefront, between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. seven days a week during summer months - July 1 to Labor Day.

People whose cars were registered to Evanston and paid the city’s wheel tax would still be able to park for free.

The city is looking to make up for the money lost by making beach access free on certain days.

According to Evanston Now, the city would pay about $100,000 for 10 new parking pay stations and for signs alerting people to the fees.

There are roughly 280 parking spaces that would be impacted.
