(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Doctors at Northwestern Medicine say long COVID patients can teach the public about what may come in the next pandemic or viral outbreak.

Northwestern’s Comprehensive COVID-19 Center has seen 1,800 patients over two years for issues like brain fog, chest pain or shortness of breath.

The center’s co-director, Dr. Igor Koralnik, said researchers are trying to determine why the virus affects people so differently.

He says one theory is this coronavirus hides in the body and makes the immune system think it’s something that must be attacked.

The center has added gynecology as a specialty. Dr. Koralnik says 65 percent of their long COVID patients are women, with the average age of 47.
