OAKBROOK TERRACE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Don’t be surprised if you soon see the flashing of red light cameras at a highly-traveled west suburban intersection again.
A DuPage County judge said Oakbrook Terrace may reactivate the red light cameras that had been removed from southbound Route 83 and eastbound 22nd Street last spring. The Tribune said the judge will allow the traffic cams to resume operation, at least until the matter is settled in court.
IDOT had first ordered the cameras removed. In five years, the red light cameras generated $12 million in fines for Oakbrook Terrace. IDOT said Oakbrook Terrace had not reported, as it should, on the effectiveness of the camera system to improve safety. Neighboring Oakbrook is against the cameras and said they were responsible for a 173% increase in rear-end collisions.
