Off-duty Cook County Sheriff's deputy critically wounded in SW Side shooting: Police

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An off-duty Cook County sheriff’s officer is hospitalized in critical condition after a shooting near Midway Airport Wednesday night.

Chicago police said a 37-year-old man was wounded a little before 9 p.m. near 47th and Cicero after seeing people inside two cars headed northbound on Cicero shooting at each other.

The Fire Department said the man is an off-duty sheriff’s officer, and paramedics took him to the hospital. Police said he was shot in the elbow and lower back.

The department said they have someone in custody after one of the cars involved hit another car then a business.

Police said officers arrested the person after a short foot chase and took them to the hospital in good condition.

There’s no word on what happened to the driver of the other car.
