The newly renovated pedestrian tunnels beneath the Lower Level Roadway at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport have been opened ahead of the busy Fourth of July weekend.

The City of Chicago said the new tunnels are a more vibrant and more inviting welcome for Chicago travelers.

Completion of the tunnels means that pedestrian walkways will now connect the terminals, the CTA Blue Line station, elevated parking, and the Hilton Hotel.

In a press release, the Chicago Department of Aviation said that the renovations included remediation work for water damage that had affected the reinforced concrete tunnels originally constructed in the 1970s.

The tunnels have a modern design and new, energy-efficient lighting. They feature wood finishes, a carved metal wall and ceiling panel, and each tunnel has its own floor finish.

Large LED screens break up the tunnels, and the screens display vibrant scenes of the city.

The three completed tunnels reopened in 2021. The other tunnels are now finished, which makes all of the tunnels open for Chicago travelers.
