A four-year-old boy has died, and three other children were hospitalized after an early morning fire in West Humboldt Park.

The Chicago Fire Department said the fire began in the basement of the brick, two-story multi-unit building near Potomac and Karlov Avenues around 12:20 a.m.

Crews put the fire out some 40 minutes later. Chicago firefighters took four children and two adults to area hospitals.

Chicago police said the four-year-old died and three other boys — ages 5, 7 and 11 are in critical condition — all from smoke inhalation.

A 40-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man are in good condition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
