(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The owners of Durty Nellie’s in Palatine announced that they want to redevelop the 18,000-square-foot gastro pub and entertainment hub — but they plan to continue running the longtime bar.

Owners Mark and James Dolezal announced plans on Tuesday to tear down Durty Nellie’s and replace it with a six-story, luxury apartment building with commercial uses on the ground floor and roof.

If the plans are approved by the Village, Durty Nellie’s would occupy space on the ground floor, and the owners said a rooftop bar is currently in the plans.

The Palatine Plan Commission unanimously approved the plans on April 4. A public hearing and review from the Palatine Village Council is scheduled for April 17.

If the Village approves the proposal, a spokeswoman with Durty Nellie’s said the project would start by spring of 2024 at the earliest. Construction is projected to last between one-and-a-half to two years.

Durty Nellie’s has been in business for 34 years. Originally, it was located on the east side of town at 55 N. Bothwell St., and in 2003 the owners moved to its current location at 180 N. Smith St.

Since the announcement, the spokeswoman said Durty Nellie’s has been receiving tons of phone calls from patrons worried that it’ll be closing — but the current plan calls for the restaurant to stay open as a scaled-down, 3500-square-foot space.
