(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Dozens of parents staged an anti-mask protest Tuesday morning during student drop-off time at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in north suburban Glenview.
It was the latest fallout after a downstate Illinois judge issued a temporary restraining order against the statewide indoor mask requirement for school students and staff.
Laura Hayes said she would have prefer that her 4-year old daughter, who is in pre-kindergarten, go maskless — if given the option.
“I don’t think masking is conducive to learning. I think it’s dehumanizing and I would really rather that she had the option not to wear a mask,” Hayes said.
She said he’s not sure the Archdiocese of Chicago has a plan in place for getting away from its masking policy. She doesn’t think the Archdiocese has been transparent about what metrics it uses to make decisions.
“I think that we need to start thinking about an off-ramp. I think we need to start asking ourselves if this is how we want to live for the rest of our lives,” the parent said.
A spokeswoman for the Archdiocese says the mask policy remains in effect, but officials are examining the judge’s ruling.
Meanwhile, in the Joliet diocese, Tuesday was the first day of a new “mask recommended but not required” policy. A spokeswoman says masks will still be required when people are in church attending Mass.
