(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An activist Chicago pastor is on a walk to Washington D.C. to ask President Biden to sign an executive order declaring violence a national public health crisis.
Pastor Anthony Williams and four supporters made a stop in Gary, Indian as they make their way across the country.
One the steps of Gary City Hall, standing with Mayor Jerome Prince, Williams noted that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recognizes violence as a public health crisis.
So, too, do the city of Chicago and state of Illinois, he said. If the president were to sign an executive order along those lines, it could go a long way toward solving the problem that's been plaguing American cities, he argued.
Williams said it would mean investment in programs and mental health.
He said the president needs to stop talking about gun violence and look at the bigger picture of what he called "structural violence."
