(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – An off-duty Chicago police officer shot and seriously wounded a person Wednesday while trying to interrupt an apparent robbery on the South Side, officials said.

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. in the 1300 block of West 90th Street, Chicago police said. The off-duty officer came upon the robbery in front of an apartment building and drew a weapon, announcing they were police.

A struggle for the officer’s weapon ensued, and one subject was struck by gunfire, police said. That person was transported to Christ Hospital in serious condition.

The off-duty police officer was taken to the hospital for observation. The officer will be placed on administrative duty, and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating.
