(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Plainfield Park District has closed access to a playground structure at Cumberland Park because of damage that authorities said may have been caused by anything from fireworks to arson.

District administrators posted images of the damage on social media today.

Photos showed the plastic slides at Cumberland Park were melted, and the mulch and playground structure were charred. The Plainfield Park District will be closed for an undetermined amount of time.

Plainfield Park District Executive Director Carlo Capalbo said they're working to replace the equipment.

“A normal playground of about that size, if the whole playground is considered for disposal, it would [cost] right around $70,000 just for the purchase of the equipment,” Capalbo said. “Then you’re looking at at least another 30 – 35% for installation and surfacing.”

It could take as much as six months for the new equipment to arrive.

Although the actual playground structure at Cumberland Park is closed due to arson, the park district says that the rest of the 2.9-acre park and swing set remain open.

Anyone with information — whether they’re a witness to this crime or any other form of vandalism, park abuse, or suspicious activity —  is asked to contact the Joliet Police Department.
