A plan by Evanston to possibly lease a lakefront picnic shelter has drawn some criticism from nearby residents.
The shelter at the Arrington Lagoon, really a brick building with bathrooms that seats about 30 inside and more outside, would be leased to a restaurant owner and alcohol would be allowed under a plan under consideration.
Not a good idea, say lakefront residents Holly and David Reynolds. Evanston now reports they spoke against the plan during a meeting hosted by alderwoman Clare Kelly.
Holly Reynolds said the idea goes against decades of effort by countless people to keep the lakefront free from any commercialization. Her husband said it doesn't appear the city has done anything to determine whether it wouldn't be a feasible project, and what the city would give up to have alcohol there.
Some others like the idea. The alderwoman said she's excited to see interest among restaurant owners, but it is not a done deal.
