(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Planned Parenthood of Illinois is launching a new pilot program dedicated to prenatal care.

It’s called “Bridges to Prenatal Care.” The pilot program provides early intervention services specifically designed for black pregnant women in Chicago’s underserved communities.

“Some of the patients that were coming to us were further along in their pregnancies and never seen a provider for prenatal care,” said Dolores Walker, director of health, equity and impact at Planned Parenthood of Illinois.

Services such as ultrasounds and pregnancy tests will be available on Chicago’s South and West sides, places Walker described as “maternal care deserts.”

“There’s a lack of maternal healthcare and hospitals that provide maternal services-labor and delivery services- for pregnant people,” Walker said.

“Bridges to Prenatal Care” will be available starting in May at Planned Parenthood’s health centers in Austin, Englewood, Roseland, and south suburban Flossmoor.
