(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A largely dormant former movie house in Portage Park has been shut down following what police say was an illegal rave party over the weekend.

Chicago police say around 11:45 p.m. Saturday they saw more than 200 individuals, along with a DJ and sound equipment and a rave taking place at the Portage Theater on Milwaukee Avenue near Irving Park Road.

Officers cleared the building, and a 34-year-old man was issued a citation for operating a business without a license.

The next day, the city issued a "no entry" order for the theater’s interior.

Police say the party is being investigated as a criminal trespass. No further information was available.

Plans to renovated The Portage Theater, built in 1920 at the "Six Corners" intersection, fell through in recent years. A previous owner surrendered the theater’s operating licenses to the city, according to Nadig Newspapers.
