CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago police are searching for whoever killed one of their own on Saturday. Officer Areanah Preston was fatally shot in Avalon Park while heading home after her shift.

She was supposed to graduate from Loyola on Saturday with a master’s degree in law. Instead the family of Areanah Preston is making funeral arrangements for the 24-year-old. An officer responding to shot spotter found Preston with a gunshot wound to the chest. She died at the hospital.

Preston had a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and law enforcement administration from Illinois State University. She told the student newspaper there in 2018 that a panel of former prisoners she observed was eye-opening and allowed her to learn first hand about the problems they go through.

The Chicago Police Department tweeted about Preston's loss.

No one is in custody at this time.
