(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A partnership between Chicago police and federal law enforcement is working to stop the flow of guns and illegal drugs in the mail.
Since February of last year, a team of 40 police officers from the Chicago area and U.S. postal inspectors have seized the contraband before it’s delivered.
Chicago Police Supt. David Brown says that has meant confiscating 42 guns and drugs worth an estimated $2.4 million.
Inspector-in-Charge Bill Hedrick detailed the collection of 96 kilos of fentanyl, 84 kilos of meth and 56 kilos of cocaine.
The collaboration is through the Chicago High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area. Director Nick Roti says the problem of shipping illegal substances intensified a few years ago. Now, fentanyl is coming in from foreign countries.
He blames the opioid for fueling the overdose epidemic in the U.S.
