(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mexican Independence Day is Friday September 16th but celebrations typically begin the weekend before and can last well beyond.

A full celebration in Chicago is planned and expected this year after a couple of years off due to COVID.

City officials say they welcome the events but First Deputy Police Supt. Eric Carter told reporters his department will closely monitor public safety and traffic.

A newly formed task force meant to crack down on street takeovers and stunt driving will also be deployed, he said.

“We will try and accommodate most everything that will take place, as far as a peaceful celebration, but when it comes to total impedance of the liberties of others, we have to take action.”

Last year, car caravans of people celebrating Mexican Independence Day created logjams in the downtown. Police ultimately began closing streets to discourage the disruptions.
