CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A business owner in Portage Park managed to take a gun away from a would-be robber, and he doesn’t recommend that others try this.
The suspect was seen pacing outside the Car Care Auto Spa on Cicero Avenue near Addison Street.
Owner James Suh said the man ran inside, pointed a gun at him, and demanded his money.
“My hands are up, and I’m like, ‘Hey, you know, take it easy, guy, stop, just chill,’” Suh told CBS 2.
Suh told CBS 2 he has a concealed carry permit and firearm training.
When the man seemed to have trouble racking the gun, getting a bullet into the chamber, he saw his opening and took it.
“I don’t know where my mind was, but that was just like — my mind was just on grabbing that gun,” he said.
There was a brief struggle. Suh got the gun and the man ran out of the shop. It was all caught on surveillance video. The man was wearing a mask and a hoodie.
The gun was turned over to police.
In this case, Suh’s actions worked out, but both he and the police don't recommend that others in that situation do the same.
