Chicago police on Friday honored a U.S. postal carrier for saving the life of a senior citizen along her route earlier this year.

Eighty-nine-year-old Helen Iwanski was found by police in her Northwest Side home on Jan. 14. She had fallen three days before but was not able to call for help.

Authorities credit postal carrier Shonda Lemon for contacting them after she noticed mail piling up outside Iwanski’s Dunning home.

"We in law enforcement are asking all the time for the community to help us, everybody to be our eyes and ears. For you to be walking your route and know your community that well just speaks volumes,” 16th District Cmdr. Maureen Biggane told Lemon during an appreciation ceremony.

Iwanski was hospitalized, went to rehab and is recovering. She recorded a video thanking Lemon for coming to her aid.

“Thank you, sweet lady, for being what you are,” the senior said.
