(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Prosecutors in DuPage County say a 22-year-old postal carrier stole more than 100 checks sent through the mail.
It was Elmhurst Police who were on the case, following mail carrier Keevon Dockery after they were called to a business to find out why checks from that business were being deposited -- but not into the accounts for which they were intended.
Police say they saw Dockery dump three bins of undelivered mail in a wooded area. He’d allegedly stolen 117 checks from the mail that totaled about $40,000.
Dockery, who resides in Chicago, is charged with several felony counts of identity theft.
“It is alleged that Mr. Dockery betrayed the public’s trust and stole mail from postal customers,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release. “I want to stress however, that the alleged actions of one rogue postal carrier is in no way indicative of the hard-working men and women of the U.S. Postal Service who perform their duties with integrity and professionalism day in and day out.”
Dockery's bond was set at $100,000. He’s next due in court Dec. 7.
