(WBBM Newsradio) -- With some Illinoisans still balking at even mask mandates, Gov. JB Pritzker seems in no hurry to require vaccinations for students to return to schools in the fall.
First, Pritzker said Thursday, there’s still a little time before COVID-19 vaccines will even be available for younger children. Thus, there’s no state decision about whether elementary or high school students will be required to get shots against coronavirus, as children are for other diseases.
As for college students, the governor said his administration has been trying to get vaccines to colleges in Illinois before students go home for the summer.
“There are other states where they are going to require students to be vaccinated before they come back to campus in the fall. That’s something we’ve looked at,” he said.
“We’ll see what percent of the population at schools this spring show up to get vaccinated.”
Pritzker announced Thursday that the state later this month will enter the “bridge phase” into completely reopening as soon as June 11, provided coronavirus metrics do not spike.
