Dr. Sameer Vohra, a pediatrician who holds a law degree and a master’s degree in public policy, will take over the public health agency, Gov. JB Pritzker announced Tuesday. Vohra will replace Dr. Ngozi Ezike, the IDPH director who became a familiar figure during COVID-19 updates during the peak of the pandemic.

"I am humbled that the Governor has entrusted me to serve the people of our State as the 20th Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health,” Vohra said in a news release. “Governor Pritzker, along with the dedicated staff of IDPH, have served our State admirably during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Ezike left in March. Amaal Tokars, the department’s assistant director, has served as interim director.
