CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — From a campaign event at Planned Parenthood Headquarters in the Loop, Gov. J.B. Pritzker stressed his commitment to making Illinois a safe haven for anyone seeking reproductive health care.

The message from the news conference at Planned Parenthood Illinois Headquarters was simple. Pritzker reaffirmed that Illinois continue to protect abortion access, but, he added, elections matter.

“This can all be taken away,” Pritzker said. “If we don’t re-elect a pro-choice legislature, and yes, a pro-choice governor, Illinois could easily end up like one of our neighboring, anti-choice states.”

Alexis McGill Johnson, President of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, noted that 26 states have banned or are expected to ban most, if not all, abortions.

Although residents of those states are seeking help elsewhere, Johnson said the 24 states where abortions will remain legal can’t absorb all of the patients from the 26 other states.

Planned Parenthood Illinois Action PAC Chair Jennifer Welch said more work needs to be done in Illinois.

“We need to cut the red tape to eliminate barriers for providers and patients and allocate funds to ensure equitable care to access,” Welch said.

Pritzker said Republicans have won the court fight to ban abortions. But, he added, the've also unleashed a tsunami of pro-abortion voters.

The governor insisted those voting for reproductive freedom will outweigh those mobilizing under the anti-abortion banner.
