(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is warning residents not to believe everything they read on social media on Election Day and in the days immediately following — in fact, he advises taking a break from Facebook, Twitter and the like.
Observers say foreign enemies may seek to agitate an already divided electorate. Because many people have voted by mail, presidential election results aren’t expected to be completely totalled Tuesday night.
Pritzker said hostile agents posing as Americans could produce false information they hope will be shared over social-media platforms.
“They would like nothing more than to promote conspiracy theories and sow discontent,” the governor said Monday, as he gave his daily coronavirus briefing.
Pritzker advises residents to get their election-related news from “reliable, trusted sources,” even if it’s several different ones, rather than social media.
Also Monday, Pritzker said Illinois National Guard troops will be at the ready if local governments request assistance. Officials say they are trying to prepare for potential civil unrest.
