(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A teenage tradition is slowly making a comeback: the senior prom.

Some schools are holding a prom that abides by COVID-19 protocols. In other cases, groups of parents are holding unofficial proms so that their high school senior and their friends can have prom memories.

Either way, business is picking up at one Southwest Side dress shop — a little.

Roy Surdej, founder of Peaches Boutique at 59th and Archer, said business is still 35% of the last "normal" prom season in 2019.

"It is just barely keeping us alive," Surdej told the WBBM Noon Business Hour.

Still, it’s an improvement over 2020, when prom season was only 10% of the year before, he said.

With customers returning to his shop, Surdej said he's staffing up.

"Now we're experiencing what most businesses in the country are experiencing, and that is getting employees to come back to work," Sudej said.
