MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Mount Prospect Police Officer has been reassigned after an appearance on Fox News to defend the “Thin Blue Line” flag patches on officer’s uniforms.
The department adopted the thin blue line patch on police uniforms in 2017; but some see far-right activism when they see the patches.
Mount Prospect Police Officers Lisa Schaps and Chris Berg defended the patch during a village board meeting following criticism from some citizens.
"Please do not paint us all with such a wide brush," said Officer Lisa Schaps. "We are here to serve and protect."
"That thin blue line that some call evil - it's not white supremacy, it's not neo-Nazism," said Office Chris Berg.
"To me it's about honor, it's about pride, it's about kinship. I even said it's about love," Office Schaps added.
Both officers made similar remarks Tuesday on Fox News; which lead to Officer Schaps, who had been a school resource officer at Prospect High School, to be reassigned at the request of the school.
Mount Prospect Police Chief John Koziol said the department will assign a new officer to Prospect and Schaps will work in investigations. He said she’s done nothing wrong, and was professional and articulate.
"She'll land on her feet here, though, because she's done nothing wrong," Koziol said. "She was articulate. She was professional. It's almost like police officers aren't allowed to speak from the heart anymore."
