(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — When the visitors center at the Pullman National Monument opens this weekend, there will be a rare opportunity to see what made the site world famous.
Superintendent Teri Gage said the Far South Side museum does not have one of the luxurious Pullman passenger rail cars that were built in Chicago.
But the owners of three of them are allowing their Pullman cars to be displayed on tracks outside the monument — but only during the opening weekend.
The cars transformed passenger rail travel in the late-19th and early-20th centuries.

“It’s a very rare opportunity. We really hope the public will come out this weekend,” Gage said. “They’re like luxury homes on wheels. One of the cars that I walked through had multiple bedrooms, and each bedroom had its own bathroom. Beautiful upholstery and woodwork. They’re gorgeous.”
Gage said Thursday she hopes a Pullman rail car will be on permanent display at the monument at some point, but that will require the approval of additional funding.
