CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Extreme, potentially dangerous heat has stuck around for another day.
An Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. for Illinois Counties such as Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane, Will, McHenry, DeKalb, Kendall, Grundy, and Kankakee. The National Weather Service warns the risk of suffering heat related illnesses, such as a heat stroke, grows significantly with conditions this hot.
AccuWeather forecasts a high of 101 degrees, which would break the record of 100, set on this date in 1947. It would be the first since 2012 that the air temperature at O’Hare Airport, Chicago’s official weather recording station, would reach triple digits.
Once again, the combination of heat and high humidity area wide will result in heat indices of at least 110 degrees, the NWS says. At times this afternoon, it could potentially feel hotter than 115.
Today’s sweltering conditions come on the backs of yesterday’s historic heat. Close to noon yesterday, O’Hare recorded a heat index of 114, the highest heat index in Chicago in 24 years.
Relief is on the way, in the form of a cold front. It is expected to arrive this evening, according to the NWS. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms could form along this front in the early evening hours. Along the Lakefront, the NWS says temps will sharply drop. Inland, temperatures will steadily come down overnight.
Tomorrow, humidity will linger but it won’t be nearly as hot, AccuWeather says. The high will be in the low 80s.
It appears our perseverance will be rewarded this weekend. Forecasts call for sunshine and pleasant conditions, with highs in the upper 70s.
