(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A Lindenhurst couple will receive nearly $1 million in a legal settlement stemming from the explosion of an outdoor fireplace at a north suburban restaurant, lawyers announced Monday.
LaVerne and Charles Burress of Lindenhurst were dining on the patio of Anastasia’s Restaurant & Sports Lounge in Antioch on Sept. 16, 2020 when a brick fireplace blew up because of a crack in a gas hose should have been detected, according to a lawsuit filed on behalf of the couple.
LaVerne Burress was seated near the fireplace and suffered a laceration to her Achilles tendon that required surgery. She was later diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, her attorneys said.
“We are pleased to have resolved this case without having her testify at trial, forcing her to relive the traumatic memories that disrupt her daily life,” said attorney John A. Mennie, an associate with Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P.C.
Parties earlier this month agreed to settle the case for $995,500, just days before a trial was set to begin in Lake County Circuit Court, the law firm said.
The listed attorney for the defendants could not be reached for comment.
