AURORA (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Aurora mayor and candidate for governor Richard Irvin is defending comments he made during his girlfriend’s arrest at a pot shop a year ago.

A police report from the May 24 incident says Laura Ayala-Clarke felt she shouldn’t be charged with battery for allegedly kicking and hitting a security guard at Zen Leaf in Aurora because the woman grabbed and pepper sprayed her after Ayala-Clarke refused to leave.

The Chicago Tribune reports the security guard told officers that Ayala-Clarke told employees she was going to call her boyfriend the mayor, who would close down the shop for not giving her money back after an issue with an ATM in the dispensary.

An officer at the scene said Irvin was upset when he arrived and called someone to say the charges ”would be taken care of”.

Irvin told the paper he was talking to Ayala-Clark and did not try to get the charges changed. Her battery charge is a municipal violation – not a criminal charge – which a police department spokesman said is up to the officer.
