(WBBM NEWSRADIO) —The leader of a Chicago fan club for an English soccer team says there is opposition on both sides of the pond to an effort by the family that owns the Chicago Cubs to buy the soccer team.

Brian Wolff heads the Chelsea Chicago Supporters Club and is also a Cubs fan. He accuses the Ricketts family of not spending the money necessary to keep the Cubs a winning team, and he says he fears they would do the same to Chelsea.

Wolff also accuses the Ricketts family of political leanings that are contrary to Chelsea's commitment to inclusion and diversity.

Todd Ricketts was a fundraiser for Republican President Donald Trump. Family patriarch Joe Ricketts was the focus of controversy in 2019 when emails written by him surfaced that expressed racist and anti-Muslim sentiments.

In a statement the Ricketts family said it rejects racism and has developed deep partnerships with Chicago's minority communities. They said they would continue Chelsea's commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The BBC reports the Ricketts family plans to meet with Chelsea fans to discuss concerns.
