(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois State Police reported an increasing trend in road rage: Incidents involving gun violence are on the rise.
About 40% of Chicago-area expressway shootings involved road rage in 2022, compared to about 12% in 2021.
Nine road rage shootings have been reported so far in 2023.
ISP urged drivers to be on the lookout for signs of road rage, including tailgating, illegally driving on the shoulder of the road and erratic lane changing.
The best way to handle aggressive drivers, state police said, is to let them pass, give them plenty of space and avoid eye contact.
Drivers were reminded to call the police if they believe another motorist is following or harassing them.
